Nearly exactly a year ago, when I started preparing my graduation project in CAFA, there is one issue pointed by Min Wang, my adviser— the social responsibility of being a designer.
Recently weather is weird in South of China, heavy snowstorm here. (Though Boston’s weather is more weird to me) environment as an old but always updated issue be put on the table again.
What I can do? How green I could be?
Eco-design
Grasp the definition from wiki: an approach to design of a product with special consideration for the environmental impacts of the product during its whole lifecycle. In a life cycle assessment the life cycle of a product is usually divided into procurement, manufacture, use and disposal.
Environmental aspects which ought to be analysed for every stage of the life cycle are:
Consumption of resources (energy, materials, water or land area)
Miscellaneous (e.g. noise and vibration)
Emissions to air, water, and the ground as being relevant for the environment

Interesting post Cici. Because I generally design for the screen, I rarely think about environmental impact, but I could see that being a major factor in industrial design type work. What does CAFA stand for?

Cici, if you’re interested in product lifecycles and “green” design, you should check out the book Cradle to Cradle.
